What is Oriental Medicine and Acupuncture?

Oriental Medicine is a holistic medical system that has diagnosed, treated and prevented illness for over twenty three centuries. While Acupuncture can remedy ailments and alter states of mind, it can also enhance recuperative power, immunity, and the capacity for pleasure, work, and creativity. Within Oriental Medicine, all of creation is born from the marriage of two principles Yin and Yang, and Qi and Blood. Harmony of these unions mean health, while disharmony leads to disease. The strategy is to restore harmony.

What is your interior Eco-Environment?

Each human being is seen as a garden with an Internal Ecosystem. In Nature, extreme wind, dampness, dryness, heat and cold wreak havoc in the world. Those same forces can derange balance within the human body obstructing the movement of Qi and Blood in the organs. As wind shakes the trees blowing leaves and breaking branches, Internal Wind manifests as Vertigo, and trembling. As saturated earth generates swamps, so Dampness becomes phlegm and edema in the body. As aridity withers vegetation, so Dryness causes chapping or cracking of mucus membranes. Just as ice inhibits the rush of water in a winter stream, Internal Cold retards circulation and depresses metabolism. As fire scorches the earth, Internal Heat inflames tissues, and causes inflammation.

Health and Illness

Qi and Blood circulate within a web of pathways called channels that link all the parts of the body, very much like the highways and byways of our country. Health exists when adequate Qi and Blood flow smoothly. Symptoms such as joint pain, headache, anxiety, fatigue, high blood pressure, asthma, and indigestion occur when circulation is disrupted. All illness is understood as a depletion or congestion of Qi and Blood. Depletion leads to weakness, lethargy, frequent illness, poor digestion, and inadequate blood flow. Congestion results in aches, tension, tenderness, pain, a distended abdomen, swelling and irritability.

How do Western and Oriental Medicine Differ?

Oriental Medicine sees each human being as having an Internal Ecosystem. Acupuncture can maximize the flow of Qi by increasing circulation, and help prevent bottlenecks that obstruct circulation. Often Western medicine intervenes only after a crisis arises. Acupuncture corrects stagnation at earlier stages so greater problems are avoided. Sometimes, Western medicine has nothing to offer for nagging chronic complaints that Acupuncture can help. The two are not a substitute for each other, but are often complimentary.
